Focus…Where Is Yours?

IMG_0463

Wednesday became a day for reflection.  In a women’s Bible Study, we talked about what and where our focus is on a daily basis.   We found out that in many cases, we need to let God be God, and give up control.  We need to surrender all, as the song says.  We discussed:

  • Be strong and take courage as we wait upon the Lord
  • God is our warrior
  • He rejoices over us with shouts of joy and with singing
  • His loving kindness is everlasting
  • He knows my voice

That was a great source to lift my spirit today!

The thing is, God wants to do that in our lives every day!  He wants to spend time with us and He wants us to communicate with Him.  When we take the time to commune with Him, we will find ourselves in the middle of all kinds of divine connections and miracles…and there will be a purpose just like there was a purpose in my journey on the way home.

IMG_1002On this day, I was reminded of dreams and visions God has at times shared with me and how they have come to fruition in my life.  This little church to the left, is the church where I grew up.  I wouldn’t change anything for the great foundation in Jesus that I was taught there!   I think about where I came from; the community in which I lived, my upbringing, people God placed in my life, and how God has kept my heart open for Him.  Wow!!  He has given me so many divine connections and blessings as He orchestrates my life.  It is my heritage, as well as, what has influenced me.  I have a free will regarding where I put my focus, and I believe my determination to live a Godly life, was instilled in me at a young age.

I have talked before in my blog about not looking back because we aren’t going that way.  But, we DO have a tendency to always look back seeing the negative things that happen to us, or the negative things that were said to us, or negative things that we did.

I have come to understand that I can look back and see the great things, the fun things, the unforgettable things that happened in my life!  I don’t have to live with, nor do I want to live with, all the parts of my life that bring me down.  God wants me to look to the future with hope.  You might be thinking, “JoAnn, you have NO idea what I lived through growing up!”  You would be right.  I don’t.  However, I have had MANY circumstances in my life that weren’t good.  Many.  What I DO know is this: there are many good times that I have enjoyed in my life also.  By looking back to the good and the fun times, it will change the my whole perspective!  It will give a fresh outlook on today.  So here is a look back to some fun memories that I cherish.

I grew up in a small town of Stanwood, WA and it was full of Scandinavians.  I always wish that I learned Norwegian, but the only Norwegian I learned, was enough to understand what my parents talked about when they didn’t want us kids to know what they were talking about!   We knew a lot of people and we lived in a time where we helped each other out in everyday life.  There were many gathering places, and whenever we gathered, it was around food, coffee and cookies.

IMG_5956IMG_5957Here is a picture that I took on Wednesday of my grandparent’s house.  When they lived there, you wouldn’t have seen these big electrical poles everywhere.  But oh, how many times I walked up that hill!  It used to be steeper than it is now.  I would walk it coming to their house from school.  My brother and I would have such fun playing on grandpa and grandma’s front porch, which was NEVER used!  Everyone always used the back door.  They wouldn’t have heard anyone using the front door anyway, because the living room was always a closed off room except for holidays.  When you opened the front door, it had a nice entry, so we would play in that also.  My brother and I pretended we had an office and the entry was that office.  Then, we would sit out on the bulk head in the summer and wait for the pea trucks to go by because they would toss pea vines out the window for my brother and I to eat!  The best!

IMG_5958

This bridge, or as we called it when we were young, the viaduct, was THE place for young people to write their class graduation year or who liked who, or whatever.  It would get quite colorful at times.  It was smooth concrete then, so it made creating art a lot easier!  It would be covered on the face of each side, as well as, on the inside of it.

IMG_5952

Farming was a big source of income in the Stanwood and surrounding area.   We would also barter with each other when we needed things.  And as I was recently reminded, even give a quarter of beef to newlyweds starting their life together.  Way to go mom and dad!  We had wood stoves, and would go out and cut wood in the summer for the winter head.  That included loading and unloading the wood also.  Some homes also had oil heaters, which we did also.

And…we took family drives.

IMG_5950

One my favorite drives, and my brothers too, was when we would take what is now called Pioneer Highway, to go to Mount Vernon and beyond.  This road had at least three good-sized bumps to go over between Stanwood and the next little town of Conway.  At that time, they were quite high and had not been graded down for safety.

My brothers and I would call out from the back seat, “Go faster, dad!”  So, he would accelerate as we came to those bumps and it was like riding a roller coaster.  Simple joys that didn’t cost a dime, but made memories that are not forgotten.

IMG_5943There were also many country roads that had big hills with ups and downs, and what fun we would have traveling over those roads, giggling as they made our tummies leap!  I thought of those memories today as I saw this road and… I took a picture!  I shared the experience of the bumps with my grandson, but the bumps have been graded down so it isn’t nearly as fun!  If we were really lucky, we would go have an ice cream on our drives through the country or to see relatives.

Somehow in those growing up years, farms became something special to me.  I think because I lived on a small farm.  I used to get up before school to help my dad feed calves and milk the cows we had, along with chickens and pigs.  So, I spent a lot of time in the barn.  So even today, I find great joy in taking pictures of barns and farms.  They are another part of local heritage and a reminder of good things in my life; a simple life.

IMG_5939

I always like this corner called Milltown.  It was like a piece of the Old West when I was a child and it still kind of looks like that today.

I hope in reading this post today, that you will choose to look back for the GOOD that was a part of your life, and remember.  Look for all the small and big details that made your life fun and was a blessing to you!

IMG_5960Look to your future with hope.  My hope for you is that you can live in the NOW, without the weight of the negatives of the past.  As in the case of my Bible Study, focus on good things and remember what He HAS done in your life.

IMG_5942

For me?  I want to be like this old house.  It has so many stories to tell!  Despite its lack of ability to house a family, it has stood the test of time, and it has a message for me today.  Focus on what God has created, and keep my eye gates open to what He still has for me to do.  I want to stand firm!   No matter how battered I may feel sometimes, I can continue to look ahead with a joy that comes from looking back at the good.  I can weather the storms and still cause someone to ponder.  Just as I did when I saw this house.

What if we lived our lives looking to all the good things?  How would it change how we live our lives each day?  How might it change how we treat others?  How might it change the way you spend your time or set your daily priorities?

Here’s a challenge for you:  Let these ideas change how you do life.  Get out a photo book.  Share a tradition with your family or friends that was a part of your growing up years.  Tell your story.  Set some different priorities in your life.  Take a drive to a place that you bring back some great memories.  Take a walk down memory lane to those good times and see how it can cause a paradigm shift in your thinking, and thus, your life!

What good memories do you have from your childhood?

Facing Big Mountains

Image

This week has been a bit of a challenge!  Ever have one of those?  Sometimes it seems like nothing goes right, or it’s just too hard?   You want to walk in faith that God knows and is in control, and even your heart knows that’s right, but your FEELINGS get tied up in knots.  It may look like a big mountain in front of us that is just too hard to get around.  I have had to hang on to Jesus this week…real tight!  Why you ask?  Life.

If you have been following my blog, you may remember back a few months ago, that we purchased our little Traveling Cottage so we could enjoy camping, our membership to Thousand Trails and some future road trips.  Oh my!!  I was so excited!  We did get a few trips out of it and what a joy it was!  But things change, and sometimes very quickly!  Terry, my sweetie, was hurt on the job and has been off of work for a few months.  THAT changes a lot of things!  We had to re-think how we are going to do life, and re-think how we can best be prepared through the next several months.  His plan was to retire this summer, but it has become apparent that it will happen a lot sooner.  So, we made hard decisions and one of them was to put our Traveling Cottage up for sale.  AND…it sold.  But there is an interesting element behind the sale of the trailer.

Image

The first potential buyer that came to see it, was a couple.  She had just recently found out that she had cancer; a very difficult and fast spreading type of cancer.  In sharing the amenities of the trailer, we enjoyed conversation about her journey.  She is one-third of the way through her treatments, with no guarantee.  She will know more in March.  But the one thing that struck me was her comment that, “You know, we can’t just wait around.  We need to do the things we NEED to do, not put off things we WANT to do, and don’t wait to wear the special clothes or jewelry or whatever.  If you have it, use it!  You have no guarantee of tomorrow.”  She was looking at the trailer because she wanted to play golf and travel with the trailer to golfing events.  She isn’t going to put it off; she is grabbing life and living everyday to the fullest!  I told her, “It’s too bad that we don’t ALL live that way, and that it often takes a crisis before we realize it.  We could enjoy life so much more!”  I admire her attitude and she is exactly right!

She didn’t buy the trailer that day.  It was meant for another.  But I won’t forget her words.  I have always identified with that attitude toward life.  It rekindled the flame in my spirit once again.  I don’t save the good dishes, glasses or whatever.  I use them.  I enjoy them with my family.  That is what they are there for.  I think about where they came from every time I use them and it brings me great joy and heart-felt memories.  I use my camera to share my life, that I might encourage someone to stop for a minute and breathe deep.  I light a candle, enjoy the candle light, and watch its flame, I make time for quiet time, I look at life through a different lens anymore, and I find joy in doing so.  It has changed myImage life.  So much so, that even though I am sad that the trailer sold, I can trust that for now, this is the best for me.  I went out and sat in the trailer and prayed over it, that the next person to own it, would find great joy in the use of it. In selling it, I found out from the new owner that we are the answer to another person’s need.  What a joy to know that this new person NEEDS our little cottage and by selling it, I am meeting that need.  So…it’s all joy, even if, it carries with it a bit of sadness.

As for the woman warrior?  Maybe, just maybe, she came to see the trailer just to deliver that message!  Who knows?  God’s like that.

The $150 Adventure!

Image

A couple of days ago, my friend Judy asked me if I wanted to take a drive up to Mt Pilchuck with her on Tuesday.  Of course, that means bring your camera and let’s see what we can see!!  Well…I’m in!!  But wait Judy!!!  Before we go, let’s see if we can get ourselves in to a position of adventure that creates fun, a bit of danger, get almost frozen, and have no money available to us, or cell phones!!!  Wouldn’t THAT be fun?!?!?!?  Let’s do THAT!

Image

Image

I digress…Yes Judy called and asked me to go and yes my camera and I jumped at the prospect!  We always have fun together and laugh a lot.  Yesterday, we had such a great time traveling where neither of us had been in years!  We headed up towards Granite Falls and stopped at the cable bridge that is up there.  We get out of the car with our cameras, walk across the bridge to get some pictures, and Judy says, “Oh no!  My battery is dead.”  Now there is NOTHING more disappointing than to go to take pictures and find you can’t!  Total bummer.  So my brain starts working on what we can do to fix this.  I tell her about a device that you plug into the lighter and charges your other devices.  So…we stop at Granite Falls Rite Aid and look around.  I ask God to helps us find what we need to be able to connect and charge her battery up.  I asked Judy if she had her charge cord with her, and low and behold, she did!!  Who’da thunk?  God came through and we found one that would fit the lighter and charge her camera battery.  She bought it and hooked that baby up!   Away we went, charging her battery all the way.

Image

We used my maps on my phone as far as we could, watching signs.  We did find Mt Pilchuck.  Judy is a great navigator!  We were taking pictures along the way.  We found some wonderful views.  There is just something so fun about a rode trip, whether it be for the day or a few days.  In our case, it turned out to be a very LOOONG day!

Image

Image

There were some interesting houses to see and we drove up as far as we could to Mt Pilchuck and then we turned around.  But we saw a wooded area of birch trees that we so beautiful against the snow.  We parked kind of weird because, who would be coming down this road?  Not like people lived there, right?  Nope… we had a car come barreling down the hill and there the Tahoe sat.  We were busy taking pictures, and they managed to get around us.  Judy and I looked at each other and said, “Go figure.”  On down the road we went and Judy was wondering if the Mountain Loop Highway was open all the way to Darrington.  I didn’t know.  Adventure!  Let’s go see.  On the way up, we saw some beautiful scenery; beautiful sloping roads with mountain backgrounds, snow stuck to birch tree limbs like cotton balls, and little waterfalls along the way.  Another stop…

Image

We continued up the highway, catching up on our lives and in-between, we are saying things like, “Oh that is gorge!”, or “Look at that!”,  and the brakes would come on for another stop to take a photo!  When we go out, often times, we find the same thing to stop for and at the same time.  SO fun!  (Manuscript Notes):  Just for the sake of background, I would usually leave the door on my side open, sometimes close it,  but Judy would grab her keys, lock it,  and put the keys in her pocket.  We had a system.  You will notice some photos have a lot of twist and turns in the road; little did I know, our day would be a lot like that.

We traveled up Mountain Loop Highway and no signs to tell us whether it was closed or not.  We were enjoying ourselves, so we kept going thinking we might be able to go across to Darrington.  But we got up to where the highway narrows, found rocks piled up high, and the saw horses are out to indicate it is the end of the line.  We turned around and headed back down looking for things we might have missed coming up.  As we are traveling along enjoying the beauty of the mountains, the sun silhouetting the mountain tops, we are both in awe over the beauty!  We felt it was great to see this on such a sunny day.  We rounded a corner and we both saw it at once!  Beautiful wall of hanging icicles and strange formations of the melted ice that looked like flowers and diamonds.  Eeerch!!!!  Swing this baby around and park!!  We get out and put our coats and scarfs on because it is cold!!  Freezing cold!  I had been having a bit of trouble at times getting out of the Tahoe because it sits so high, so I was trying to be careful this time lowering myself to the ground.  I didn’t want to touch the door because of the locks there.  However, somehow, even though I used my right hand to brace myself with the vehicle, my left arm must have brushed those locks just enough to touch them.  Judy was outside the Tahoe already and when I heard it beep, I thought she had locked it, so I closed the door.  Came around the front, and the horn honked.  Oh NOOOOOOO!!!  The doors locked and Judy did NOT have the keys in her pocket!  I tried to be so careful getting out and was sure I didn’t touch the door.  But, Judy in all her kindness says with an expression of sorry, “I think you did.”  Oh my gosh!!  We are now at least 18 miles up Mountain Loop Highway, no living people within miles and miles, locked out of the Tahoe in freezing weather, with nothing around us, no phone, no purse, not a thing to help us.  AND…all those items?  Yah…they sitting on the seats in plain sight!

Cars coming or going are not much of a happening thing up there, if you know what I mean.  We walk around the Tahoe trying all the doors, like the Tahoe won’t lock ALL the doors in the vehicle; just ours.  Duh!  Yah, uh huh.  We look at each other and say, “What are we going to do?”  What DO photographers do?  We had stopped to take pictures of this, so we might as well take advantage of this situation!  We both cross the road and snap away!!!  At least we are going to get pictures out of it!!!  Ok.  Back to reality.  We reaccess our situation, which is no different than it was before.  We again wonder what we can do.  Judy said she was tempted to break one of her windows.  Oh man!  Not that!  I hated to see that happen but we were kind of desperate!  If we stay out in the weather, we are going to freeze to death.  Immediately, a news scrip comes to mind on our current situation.  News Flash!!!  “Two women found on Mountain Loop Highway, around the Silverton area above Granite Falls, frozen to death with cameras in hand.  The women are yet to be identified.”  Hahaha!!!  Nope.  Don’t want to go there.  I prayed and ask God to provide somehow for us because this was a dangerous situation; it was late afternoon and soon the temperatures would drop even more.  I was so thankful I hadn’t just hopped out to take the pictures; I had my coat and scarf!  I pulled it closer around me and my scarf up by my ears.

The pictures we stopped to get:

After a few minutes of walking around, feeling rather helpless, I again prayed and asked God to provide.  A few minutes later, I looked again up and down the road.  Nothing.  We talked about options as we walked around to warm up.  Pretty soon, I walked back to the road looking up and down just in case there was something.  Not sure what I expected but I was praying God would answer.  This time I saw a pickup truck coming.  All ideas of the danger of hitching rides and strangers went up in smoke.  Desperate times called for desperate measures!  If there IS a car, I’m getting them to stop.  So I am raising my arms and waved them as I walk closer and closer into the road.  I look over and Judy has joined me in doing the same, and the pick up slows down, swings in, and then stops.  We walk over to the truck to find a guy leaning over to open the passenger side window.   After explaining our situation, he got out and did a check around the vehicle to see if there was something he may know of.  Nope.  We learn his name is Mike and we ask if there is any land line close by for us to make a call.  He thought that just up the road there was a sheriff’s radio available to make contact for emergencies.  We both thought this was an emergency, and so when he offered to take us up the road about 8 miles to check it out, we agreed to go.  So, he cleans out his front seat of his little beater pick up truck and we climb in.  Now, I am in the middle, with a small portion seat, and this is a 5 speed…not easy on my knees to say the least, but God had provided us transportation.  His little truck was warm.  I’m thankful.  His name was Mike and he is from Snohomish.  He was coming up to check to see if there was snow.  We gladly told him there was, but hoping he would help us women in distress first.  When we arrived, there was no sheriff’s radio anymore.  We came back down and he said we can try the ranger station because they have someone to man that.  That was 8 miles back and then another 8 or so miles to the station.  We are thankful for this option and gladly say yes.  So as we travel, he gives us some history of the area.  We find out he is a birdwatcher and some of the jobs he has done in his life.  He is a very kind man and when the ranger station is closed, he again tells us about having a spare key in a secret place, and calling a tow truck.  Yes we COULD call, IF we had a cell phone and IF there was service.  He says he has a cell phone but this area is a no phone zone.  Oh goodie.  In all our efforts to figure this out, Judy and I are trying to whisper a bit back and forth what we can do.  Judy tells him that she would like to get to an area where she can maybe call a locksmith to come and open the Tahoe.  So THAT is our new plan.  We drive along and it is getting kind of crowded for a long trip to Granite Falls and Mike tells us, “This  pick up was made so that three Japanese men could comfortably sit in it.  What were they, gnomes?”  We laugh our heads off!  He had a pretty dry, funny sense of humor and we are glad for the distraction.  I’m am glad for something to laugh at, because in the back of my mind, I’m thinking, what if this person is just telling us about all these places and knows they aren’t available just to get us to a place where bad things can happen?”  Crazy how your thoughts go sometimes.  Then, I think of Judy and I, and say to myself, “Hey, it’s two against one!  He wouldn’t stand a chance!”  So, then my mind goes to thinking about whether we can get someone to do it, and how much will it COST?  I feel responsible!  I’m closest to the Mike and look down as his gas gauge, and become a bit worried when it is down on empty!  He’s trying to help us and his tank is empty.  But I remember having a few cars where I would have to guess on my gas, so maybe he has one of those kind of cars.  I mean, the guy was going UP mountain when he stopped for us.  No gas stations up there!  As we got into cell range, I was able to call Terry and let him know a little of what had happened so he would expect me to be later getting back home.  As I hung up, his phone dings, so I know he has a pay per use phone.  I am wishing I could buy some minutes or gas for his trouble.  Mike drives us into Granite Falls, and Judy asks him if he could drop us off at the police department.  So, bless his heart, he takes us there and we thank him profusely, as we have nothing to give him since our purses are locked up in the Tahoe on the mountain.  He parting comments was, “Spare key!”  I secretly thank God, that He sent us the right kind of person, and that He would bless Mike for his kindness.

With heads held high, we walk into the police station and ask for help in finding someone who might be able to get us back up the mountain and unlock the Tahoe.  She directs us up the street to a little place that could easily be missed if you weren’t so desperate to find them.  As we walk into the little office and talk to the guy about our situation, it occurs to us, that we have no money to pay them.  He says, “We take credit cards.”  We say, “Yes that is great IF we had our credit cards.  But our purses and everything dear to us is in that Tahoe up the mountain.”  He tells us that all his trucks are out and it will be 45 minutes to an hour before he will know where his trucks are.  So he suggests that we walk down to the restaurant and get a bite to eat and we can call him to check in to see what he has found out.  We are looking at each and saying, uh huh.  Call with what????  Do you remember the part about us telling you we are locked out with our purses and cell phones in the vehicle?  But, we take the number and walk down the street to the cute little pizza place.  We ARE thinking something to eat sounds good.  Until…we get inside and sit down and realize once again that we can’t do that because we have no money!!!  This sweet little waitress comes up and starts talking and we explain our circumstances and ask if we can just sit here while we wait.  She says we can.  She immediately picks up her phone and calls a someone she knows can help.  She tells us no answer.  She informs us that we can eat and pay later; no problem.  Wow!!  That is pretty cool!  We decline, but thank her.  I was very thankful for a place to sit down for a while.  I had been doing a lot of walking.

Image

We are sitting there trying to be patient.  So I decided to take a picture of Judy’s camera.  All of a sudden, Judy sees a truck go by from the company we are waiting for.  This waitress see the number on the truck, gets on her cell phone and calls them.  She says, “Hello.  This is so and so, from Granite Falls Police Department, and I have your two ladies here that are waiting for you to take them up the mountain to get into their vehicle?  Do they have time for a bite to eat before you are taking them up or are you leaving right away to take them to their car?”  She pulls the cell from her ear and asks us whether we want to eat or go right away?  We say we will eat later and would like to get back to the car as soon as we can.  It is getting dark.  So in a few minutes, NOT 45 minutes or an hour, a guy is picking us up to take us back up the mountain!  Bless her police woman’s heart.  She used her position and clout to help speed things a long!  We told her we would come back for dinner and out the door we went!  Thank you to the sweet heart of a person who was willing to help two strangers in need!

As we follow the guy, we now know is DJ, to his pickup, once again I am in the middle.  A bit better though because this is an automatic.  Thank goodness!  We learn a bit more about him as we travel back up to the Tahoe.  We tell him our story.  He laughs and says he has heard a lot of stories behind keys getting left in a vehicle.  I ask if he has had any he couldn’t get into and he tells us only one.  Judy and I look at each and think, “Thank you Jesus!”  As we wind up the Mountain Loop Highway, we finally come to the Tahoe and are pretty excited to get back inside.  After a lot of playing with his magic wand, he finally gets it open!  We were happy enough to do a happy dance, but didn’t, because he might think we are weirder than we already were given our day!  I run over and take another picture of the icicles and say, “Take THAT!”  He couldn’t take a split payment, so Judy was on the hook for it until we got home.  We got him paid and he waits until we have the Tahoe running before he leaves.  Thanks DJ.  We both get in the car and are so happy to be “inside” and on the way home.  DJ, you were the best!

My SO THERE picture I took.

As we are driving back, Judy and I are talking about how much fun we have when we are together and it is always an adventure!!!  So true!  We have stories to tell and I told her I was going to tell this one.  We kept our promise and stopped for dinner at the little place in Granite Falls.  She greeted us with great relief that we got back safely.  We thanked her for her help and enjoyed a warm restaurant and a good dinner.  On a quiet moment on the way home, I was thinking about our day and told Judy that Mike came up for snow, and that bird watcher got part of what he was looking for…he got to see a couple of crazy birds!!  And Judy says, “Yep!  A couple of loony birds!”  Then, I asked Judy if she thought some of our pictures could be sold for $150?  …Anyone?

I’d do it again with you Judy!!  We had angels in our midst today, but I think we will also stick to your plan with extra keys in both pockets!

Post Surgery Journey

canstockphoto0019485I just finished reading a book that I got to read post surgery from bilateral knee replacements.  But I found that after that, I had trouble concentrating enough to read a book.  I could read short writings, but couldn’t get into a book.  I originally thought that it would be good to challenge myself afterwards, and give me a good push to keep me on track for the first 40 days.  However, it turned out to be something that I read over the LAST 40 days and what a change it has made.  You see, when we get off track, it’s hard to see it in ourselves sometimes.  Deep down we might know something is not what it should be, but we don’t change it.  We might feel powerless, or maybe, overwhelmed.  But I have to tell you, this fired up my engine in the process of my recovery, and I have gotten my mojo back!

Here is a little update after the surgery.  I am walking fine, up and down steps, been off allIMG_4948 meds six weeks post surgery.  PT was over after about ten visits.  But it has been the hardest thing I have done in my life!  I still get stiff after sitting and its hard to get up a lot of times.  But I keep pressing on.  I do my exercises, I push my knees to bend more and more, and I do my scar massage twice a day.  I was still having a hard time with my scar tightening up which made bending more difficult.  So I did some research on other ways of doing a scar massage.  Since doing that, I have noticed a difference in just a few days.  I am even able to sleep a little more relaxed as far as sleeping positions are concerned.  But, is it all great and wonderful?  Nope.  It is still hard to do somethings.  I can’t walk for exercise; only just short walks.  I can only ride my stationary bike for a certain amount of time or I’m overdoing it.  It can be very frustrating.  I still have tightness in the knees and muscles in my legs.  In this recovery, I have had trouble sleeping at night, hives, a bad cough, and my hair has been falling out by the handful.  However… I know if I keep going and doing what is right, then I will have the results I want.  I have to be patient in my recovery time.  Doctors have told me I am way ahead of where I should be at this point in my recovery, so that keeps me going also.  This journey isn’t your journey, however, no matter the hard circumstance, we can learn a lot from these times.  I may have to wait a long while to see the results of all my hard work.  What are some of my take aways?

IMG_5336I learned that it doesn’t do me any good to talk about my problems, but instead talk to my problems about God.  He knows.   He is a big God and He is in control of my healing.  He is powerful.  Remembering that He is faithful means that I can come to Him with anything.  Mine… is my recovery.  Yours might be something going on in your life or relationships.  It doesn’t matter…He is right in the middle of it with us.  In those dark times or dark nights, that is who I run to!  He is answering because in the last couple of weeks, I felt a shift within me back to the things He wants me to focus on.  I’m excited!  I have a lot of projects in the making and can’t wait to see where it all goes.  It has become my testimony because I feel that without prayer and the Holy Spirit, I wouldn’t be where I am today.  I am peeking into my future and I see great things, no matter how it looks today!  The idea of writing on a blog is a great way to share my testimony.  Why?  We get a boost in our faith by sharing it, and also by those that read and comment!  AND… God gets the glory.  God is faithful to answer and to heal.  I choose to give Him the glory!

Invite Him into your circumstances!  He wants to show Himself faithful because He IS faithful.  I leave you with this message:  Keep pressing on and if you have something you would like me to pray over, please leave it in the comments here or on the blog, or you can message me, and I will pray for you.

Ship Wrecked

IMG_5381Have you ever felt like you and your life are ship wrecked?  Or you may feel like you are full tilt or lilting to one side?  Maybe the winds of life have pushed you where you don’t want to go.  Maybe the rains came so hard that you are lilting to one side and feeling totally off-balance.  You may be taking on water and afraid of sinking and feel like no on cares!  Sometimes you can bail and bail and bail, and it still seems like the storm is hitting your boat/life harder and faster than you can handle.  It seems impossible to right your boat again.  I know.  I have been there.

Sometimes these times are of our own doing; decisions we made, not moving where God told us to move, not ending something that needed to be ended, a relationship God told us to stay away from or at least keep at a distance.  It could be a number of things.  However, it can also be life hitting us, and we are being tested, and we need to build our trust and faith.  How are we going to react to our situation?  Do we trust God to get us through it no matter how it looks?  Remember the story of the Jesus and His followers in the boat and the storm came up?  Jesus was down in the boat sleeping!  Everybody else was freaking out!  He came and spoke to the sea and it immediately became calm.  Where was the faith of the followers?  Seriously?  Jesus was in their boat!!  But their faith in Him and their trust in Him left with the first wave!

What about you?  Does that same thing happen to you in your times of feeling blindsided?IMG_5382  Here’s a little peek in my window of life:  Have you ever thought about the fact that those hard times are not to push at your patience or tolerance level, but to BUILD strong character and endurance in you?  When you can turn to Him first instead of getting angry or fearful, He will help you handle it.  He will give you hope instead of being disappointed or losing your trust in Him.  I found it helpful to just tell God what I’m feeling because He knows it anyway.  So I go there to Him first.  When you do, you will grow in relationship with Him, and that in turn, will cause you to grow in your love of God and better see His hand in your circumstances.  Get that Bible out and search for answers, guidance and comfort.  He wants to speak to you.  It will direct you to a whole lot better self-talk in those times.  If we don’t go “there” we open the door for the devil to discourage us.  I would rather be shipwrecked with Jesus, then to go it alone.  So, climb aboard and let’s sail off with some confidence that Jesus is in our boat!

What’s In A Word?

Words

Today in my quiet time, I was thinking and praying about my word for this year…watchful.  I went to the dictionary and here are a few things it had to say about watchful:

Observe, close observation, keeping guard, time on duty, vigil, watchman, keep awake, be cautious, and contemplate.

Wow!  That is a mouthful of the same word!  But when I started going through the list, it is a lesson onto itself!  So let’s look at these words because they apply to your life daily, and to mine.

Let’s start with observe and close observation.  To observe is to sit back and watch over all that which is going on.  Something may catch your eye, or you see a behavior, a mannerism, something you like or dislike, and you are pretty relaxed as you sit and observe what is going on around you.  Now close observation, that means you are zeroing in on something.  You look for movement, changes, expressions, things that tell you more about what you are observing.  You are taking a specific interest in something or someone.  What if we really did that every day?  What would we notice and “move on” if we thought about this more as we went about our day?

What about Vigil?  We think of prayer vigils, but that word means that we are on it; maybe even 24/7 for a period of time.  We don’t leave until our appointed time.  We observe closely what is going on while we are there.  For me, vigils will always include prayer.  I want to see what I am supposed to be seeing and pray for what God wants to give me.  It is my responsibility to open up to God so that He can place within my heart, that which He desires for me to see and be a part of.  It is constant.  I’m on alert.

Keeping guard is like the watchman.  I have talked before about being a watchman on the wall.  But, again, we have to learn what we are watching for.  We have to ask God to show us what we are watching for.  Why do we watch?  So we can discern the enemy or The Messenger and know which is which.

Keeping awake is something some of us would rather not do.  I have had weeks since myIMG_5249 surgery of not sleeping at night.  I don’t think there is anything more frustrating than wanting to sleep and can’t!  But in this case, we are to “keep awake”.  Why?  We don’t want anything sneaking up on us.  We are to keep awake and pray.  We want to stay awake with God.  Give Him our fears and concerns and worries.  It may involve a period of waiting.

Cautious is another definition.  Cautious is once again knowing what is for me and what is against me.  How do I know THAT?  We can ask God for discernment and He will give it to us.  When we have a close relationship with Him, we more easily recognize God at work, when God speaks, and what He would have us to do.  But we need to be cautious of many things such as, what we watch, how we speak, our example to others, and what we listen too and what or who we spend time with.  It’s easy to get off track.  It may sound good, tickles your fancy a bit, and its easy, but it may not be biblically correct.  Be cautious.

Contemplate is one that closely resembles your quiet time.  It’s a time when you are quiet and you listen.  it’s hard for us to be quiet sometimes but that is a good skill to improve upon.  When we are quiet or reading God’s Word, we contemplate its meaning to us, and what would God have us to do with what we learn?  Use it in our everyday lives of course.  Take time to contemplate where you are and where you are going.  Think and review.  How does it apply?  What truth is in it for me?  Remember when your parents got on you about something you might have done wrong?  They would tell you to go to your room and think about it?  Sounded dumb to me when I was young because I could go to my room and do anything I wanted then.  But did I?  I might have done some things, but usually in the middle of the “things” I was thinking about what they said.  We are to be contemplative.

Lastly is time on duty.  Now this is where the rubber meets the road!  How much time do I give to being watchful, or observing, or using my awake time?  It’s how much time we give God.  Do we live out our daily lives as God would live?  I don’t think this means “duty”.  It means how much time I give in my day to things of the Lord.  Each of us has something we are to do here on earth.  Spend time on duty seeking what He has for you to do.

So here we are in a new year and I would challenge you to think through these words that mean watch/watchful.  I know it’s MY word for the year, but I think we can all benefit from having these thoughts in the forefront of our thinking.  Don’t get over whelmed, just ask God to give you the watchful eye to see what He sees and to act on what He wants for you to act on.

I’m excited to see what it brings into my life.  I know when God moves to help others, it ends up blessing me more!  You will begin to see what you haven’t noticed before and it the process, your life will also be changed.  Want a good book on this subject of noticing?  Read The Noticer by Andy Andrews.  You will never be the same!  I hope this chat time will give you the boost you need to start!

What Happened in 2013?

841055_10200530283599980_1390792160_oI don’t know how your New Year’s Eve went, but I enjoyed ours very much this year.  It was a quiet and reflective evening for me.  Part of the evening was going through my Gratitude Jar.  This is the first year I have done this and it will now become our tradition!  It was so fun and encouraging to read through all the things that God had done in our lives during 2013.  We can sometimes go along each day or week or month and not think about what takes place around us.  It’s good to be aware of found keys when they were lost, a phone call from a friend at just the right time, extra money made available, just the right person to help at just the right time, and so many more.  I love to be reminded of those things as I drop my heart in my jar, as well as, after the year is up.  Thus, I would encourage you if you haven’t tried it, to get a jar, decorate it, and start dropping those great things into that jar and at the end of the year, have a year in review.   The best part for me when I went through myIMG_4110 jar?  A sweet little 8-year-old boy, my grandson Ethan, had placed a few in the jar!  One was especially precious to me and made my night.  See?  You never know who will be touched by what they see you do, talk about, or show as an example!  It will be framed in my office!

What is the advantage of practicing gratitude?  You begin to see things differently.  You look for ways to see God’s provision.  Remember, it’s not about what you want, it’s about what God has for you.  Each time He does something fantastic, big or small, you come to live with eyes wide open and see what He wants you to see.  If we are truly thankful for our lives, then we can find more joy in the life we live out every day.  I find I’m expecting those blessings.  It will give you a direction for each day because you are looking for that heart dropping moment.  When we expect from God, AND we have faith and trust in Him, He will come through; sometimes bigger than we think!

IMG_5249Part of my end of the year is also to ask God for a word for my new year.  I start in the Fall to ask God what He wants to be concentrate on this next year.  Last year the word was Light.  This year, through various confirmations, I was given the word Watchful.  He wants me to be watchful of what it is that He wants me to see.  Think about that for a moment…He DOES have things He wants to accomplish through me.  He has things He wants to accomplish through YOU!  Are you asking Him what they are?  So He is asking me to put my trust in Him, watch for Him, and then move on His direction.  Just like the watchman on the wall that would guard the walls and watch for intruders AND messengers, I need to keep my eyes keen on the horizon!  There may be a message coming, a person I need to recognize, understanding I need to give.  I don’t know what it will be, but I am willing to learn about that word this year of 2014!  I will study all about that word so I know exactly what its meaning is.  But then, I will learn more about what its meaning is for ME personally.  So you will see things that strike me via my photos and writings about WATCHFUL this year.  I hope you too, will learn more about it also, and consider asking God for a word for you to learn more about and make personal to your life.

Open DoorIf this is a new approach to you, pray about it and ask God for direction.  If having a relationship with Jesus is something you question, take a moment and ask Him to show Himself to you and give it all over.  He would love to do that in this new year!  Open the door and walk through with Him.  Nothing is too hard for Him to handle with you.  It’s like a song I wrote for myself several years ago.  But the first verse reminds me where I need to go:

My burdens are many, it’s a heavy load.

and an uphill struggle; a rocky road.

But I have to keep join’, remembering the Word of my Lord,

“I will never leave you, keep the faith and my Word.”

Chorus:  So I keep on walking, singing Jesus love for me.

Repeating verse 16 of John, chapter 3,

Picturing Jesus walking next to me,

I can smile and give, my thanks through grace , I’m free.

Have a wonderful 2014!  Get up everyday and ask what one good thing you are supposed to do that day.  See what God does!

Watchful

Image

With 2013 coming to an end, it causes me to reflect on the many things that have happened this year.  What a ride it has been!  We have seen many of our goals accomplished, we gave more in financial and other ways, I survived a big surgery and still recovering, loved on more people, enjoyed studying a lot, and I have walked closer with the Lord than last year.  So all in all, I have had a good year and I find God, as ever, faithful!  This year brings a new tradition on our household.  So, on New Year’s Eve, my man will enjoy some quiet time at home, a few snacks, a toast, and then, I will open my Gratitude Jar and we will read through each heart that has been dropped in that jar all this year!  I love remembering how God has provided or connected for/with me in my daily life.  I will carry this tradition in to 2014.

Image

So what is up for this coming year of 2014?  I’m not sure but I walk into it expectantly and watchful!  “Devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”  Colossians 4:2.  Yep!  That is the word that God gave to me for this next year.  I am to be watchful for what God wants me to notice.  I am excited to see how God works this word out in my life next year.  I know that prayer is very important in the life of a believer and it can be the difference between me seeing things with my physical eyes or seeing things with my spiritual eyes.  I have the feeling God is going to use both in me next year.  He wants to me to watch for various things that He wants me to see.  Mark Batterson talks in one of his books about the Holy Spirit being like a sixth sense and that there are some things that can only be perceived through the Holy Spirit.  I am inclined to agree with that.  But we must seek Him daily in our lives so that we are in tune enough with Him, that the Holy Spirit can clearly speak to us.  The more time we spend with Him, the deeper our relationship goes and we can recognize when it is Him working in us.

I am going to be diligent in my pursuance of God, and ask again for things in my life with bold faith.  Some of my goals are what others may consider as crazy goals!  But for me, I have seen God answer so many of them, that I am looking forward and watching for what goals He will answer through this next year.  I am thankful that He has been working in my life, excavating in me enough that I DESIRE to set lofty goals, and make more changes in myself.  In fact, I WANT to change!  What about you?  Will you be more bold this next year in prayer?  Will you seek Him more in quiet time?  Want to live a life you have never lived before?  Walk closer than you have ever walked with God before?  Are you bold enough to ASK Him to change the things that need changing?  We do have to step into the water before God will part it.  I’m all in… and jumping in!    Now is the time.  He is calling us all to lean in closer.  Be watchful of what God is doing in and around you.  He wants you to pray, believe, and then let Him do it, and then thank Him.  I hope you have a wonderful New Year and remember a prayer of thanks for all He HAS done, then thank Him for what He already has in store for you!

Please share in the comments any special gratitudes that you have from this last year.  Thanks for being a faithful reader of this blog!  I hope you share it and enjoy it even more this next year!  For those who were encouraged by my post about my jar, to make one of your own, I hope you will share how it was for you as you read through the year in the life of…YOU!

365 Days of Thankfulness

ImageWith all the “Days of Thankfulness” out there for us to read, I ask myself, “Why is it that we wait until Thanksgiving to be thankful?  What is our reason for sharing?  It isn’t that sharing thankful thoughts is not a good thing.  It is!  But I just get to thinking, “Why are we living it out now this month rather than all year around?”  What would our lives be like if we did that every day all year?  Do you think it would change the way you live out each day?

Ok. I am going to get on my momma soap box here for a second.  I hear and read complaints about the weather…really?  Most of us complaining have a home, we can keep warm there, we have some food that we can go to the cupboard/refrigerator and fix, we get to come in out of the weather, we have hot water for bathing, we have a car that keeps us out of the weather and warm as we travel, and we can gather with others over coffee, to name a few.   And yet, if we get a little rain or snow comes our way, we feel down in the dumps.  I remember laying in the hospital looking out the window and just being thankful I was alive to observe the light, the clouds and the beautiful trees.  Believe me, I didn’t complain about the weather.  I was happy to have another day to enjoy whatever came my way; even IF it meant discomfort and hard work.  I had to LOOK for the good in my day, that is for sure.

I love photography and I read an article recently about photographers and the rain.  Most photographers don’t want to go out in the rain to shoot photos, and yet there are some wonderful photo opportunities if we do.  I am thankful I have a camera to shoot photos and that I can walk around to see things up close.  Also, that I can take a photo and make a memory.  I think we miss out on the blessings by complaining instead of concentrating on the fact that:

  • we are alive,
  • we have a place to live
  • we are free
  • we have food
  • we have clothing
  • we are receiving
  • we wake up each day for another opportunity to do good

To me, that is the best of all worlds.  I wake up to my husband, family, friends and my life.  Why do I want to ruin that by living by my emotions, and whether or not there are few drops of rain or an absence of sunshine?

ImageDon’t get me wrong.  With all that I have gone through after my surgery for bilateral knee replacements, I have had my times of complaints to Him!  But, God quickly reminds me of what He has done.  I have a great doctor, given quick healing, quick mobility, good doctor reports, GREAT care, and friends that helped me.  I am changed.  My thoughts quickly turn to what is good.  And…I am thankful!

As I have shared before, I have a gratitude jar that I made and used this last year.  I have to tell you it is over half full!  I used a GALLON jar because I wanted and expected to fill that up!  But, it has changed my thinking as I look for those heart-shaped gratitude blessings to put into my jar.  Come New Year’s Eve, I will open my jar and review all of them for this last year!  Once again, I will celebrate what God does every day in my life!  I got a card from a friend the other day and it shared that sometimes we are the puddle and other times we are the puddle jumper.  Today, I am the puddle jumper and encouraging you to jump with me.  Make thankfulness and gratitude part of your every day life; 365 days a year!

Why not look for what we CAN do where we are?  As Mark Batterson says in his book, All In, “We can do nothing wrong and still do nothing right.”  Let’s do it right!  Let’s begin looking for those things in our lives every day that are right!  Do you have an extra $20?  How about taking that money and get a few McDonald’s or Starbucks cards so that you can share with someone who doesn’t have what you have; give them a warm cup of coffee or cocoa.  THAT is getting our eyes off of us and onto someone else.  That is doing something right!  That is part of being thankful; we recognize that giving is the best gift of all, and it changes us.

So remember, this IS the day the Lord has made.  Let us rejoice and be glad in IT!  (My emphasis)  Let’s jump the puddle today, shall we?  We can’t be puddle jumpers without a little rain.

Walking the journey with you…

P.S.  Let me know what you are or are going doing to live out your days with thankfulness.  I would love to hear!
